Your Medicaid Health Plan

Medicaid through Managed Care

Most Medicaid members get their services from a managed care plan. Medicaid members who are not also enrolled in Medicare can enroll in one the following managed care plans:

Picking your Managed Care Plan

If your application for Medicaid is approved, you will get information about your managed care options. This information will come in the mail and be available on the HealthyRhode Customer Portal. You can use that information to choose between one of the managed care plans (Neighborhood, Tufts, and United). If you do not make a choice, the state will automatically enroll you into one of the plans.

When you enroll in a managed care plan, you will get an insurance card from that plan. When you need healthcare or prescriptions, you can show this insurance card to your doctors and other healthcare providers. The healthcare providers will send bills to the managed care plan, and the managed care plan will pay the claims. You will not have any co-pays, deductibles, or other cost-sharing as long as the services or medications you are receiving are covered by your health plan.

Not all healthcare providers accept RI Medicaid. If you are enrolled in a managed care plan, call the number on the back of your insurance card to find providers who work with your plan.

You can also find a provider that accepts your insurance by visiting the website of your managed care plan:

If you want to change plans later, you can either wait for an open enrollment period or ask to switch. You may be allowed to switch outside the open enrollment period, depending on the reason you want to change plans. Click here to learn more about changing your managed care plan.

Rhode Island has a dental managed care plan called RIte Smiles. Currently, RIte Smiles is available for people who were born after May 1, 2000. People born earlier than that date get dental services paid directly by Medicaid. You can learn more about RIte Smiles here:

Fee-for-Service Medicaid

Fee-for-Service Medicaid means that you are not enrolled in a Medicaid managed care plan. You may be automatically enrolled into Fee-for-Service Medicaid if:

  • You are on Medicare, you can choose whether to enroll in managed care or stay in Fee-for-service.
  • You have health insurance from an employer, your wraparound Medicaid will be under fee-for-service, not managed care
  • You are enrolled through a program for working adults with disabilities, your wraparound Medicaid will be under fee-for-service, not managed care

The State will send you an insurance card. When you need healthcare or prescriptions, you can show this insurance card to your doctors and other healthcare providers.

With Fee-for-Service, Medicaid pays doctors and healthcare professionals directly for each service you receive. For example, if you visit a doctor for a check-up, the doctor charges Medicaid, and Medicaid pays the doctor that fee. You will not have any co-pays, deductibles, or other cost-sharing.

The managed care plans described above do not cover dental services for adults. To find dental services near you, please visit this web page from the RI Department of Health. Note: Before going to a dentist’s office, please call first to ask about availability and make an appointment. If you have Fee-For-Service Medicaid, you should ask the dental provider if they accept Fee-for-Service Medicaid.
