How We Verify Income
When you apply for Medicaid, we ask for your employment and income information. We use a national database to confirm the information you gave us is correct. We also check your employment and income information during annual renewals and quarterly checks. This process helps us make sure you, and other people in your household, continue to be eligible for Medicaid.
One of the data sources Rhode Island uses to confirm you're eligible for Medicaid is called the Work Number. The Work Number gives RI Medicaid the most current view of your employment information.
If your income is too high for Medicaid, you will get a notice from the State of RI requesting additional documentation.
- If you send us documentation that shows you are income eligible, the State will keep you enrolled in Medicaid. You will get a second notice telling you about this decision.
- If you provide documentation that shows you are not income eligible (or if you do not reply to the notice), you will get another notice letting you know that you are no longer eligible for Medicaid. The notice will have information about other health coverage options through HealthSource RI (HSRI). If you think our decision is wrong, the notice will tell you how to appeal.
